Amish Sugar Cookies

1 cup sugar


1 cup powdered sugar


1 cup butter or margarine


1 cup cooking oil


2 eggs


4 1/2 cups flour


1 teaspoon baking powder


1 teaspoon baking soda


1 teaspoon cream of tartar


1 teaspoon vanilla








Combine sugars, butter and oil, beat well. Add eggs and mix well. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar and vanilla. Cover with plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator overnight. Make into small balls and flatten slightly with a fork. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Do not over cook.

1 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar


1 cup butter or margarine


1 egg


1 teaspoon vanilla extract


2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour


1 teaspoon baking soda

Mix sugar and butter. Add the egg and vanilla mixing thoroughly. In a separate bowl, mix together dry ingredients. Blend into butter mixture. Refrigerate dough 2 to 3 hours. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Divide dough in half and roll 3/16 inch thick on floured surface. Cut dough with cookie cutter and sprinkle with sugar. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake 7 to 8 minutes or until delicately golden.

2 1/2 cups flour


1 teaspoon baking powder


3/4 teaspoon salt


1 cup sugar


3/4 cup softened butter


2 eggs


2 teaspoons vanilla


1 can of vanilla icing (any brand)








In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside. In a large bowl at medium speed, beat sugar and butter until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. At low speed, beat in flour mixture until well blended. Divide dough into two portions. Cover and chill 1 hour. Heat oven to 350 degrees. On a floured surface, roll one portion of dough at a time to about 1/4 inch thickness. Dip cutter in flour and cut cookies. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 9 to 12 minutes until edges are light brown. Cool cookies on paper towels. Decorate with frosting. You can also have a few bowls out, place about 4 tablespoons of frosting into each bowl. Add different colors of food color to each bowl and mix thoroughly to get desired color.








Great Grandmothers Sugar Cookies

2 cups sugar


2 eggs


2 teaspoons lemon juice


2 teaspoons nutmeg


1 cup shortening


1 cup sour cream


4 cups flour


1 teaspoon baking powder


1 teaspoon soda


1 teaspoon salt








Combine all ingredients. Chill over night. Roll to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut your shapes and bake at 350 degrees 8 to 10 minutes.

Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Chill dough for 2 hours. Roll to desired thickness and use favorite cookie cutters. Bake in 350 degree oven for 7-10 minutes. ICING: Combine all ingredients. It is best to ice the cookies while they are still warm.








Mom's Old Fashion ';Puffy'; Sugar Cookies

5 cups flour


1 cup Crisco shortening (butter or regular)


2 cups sugar


2 teaspoons baking powder (heaping)


1 teaspoon baking soda (level)


2 eggs (mix with 1/2 teaspoon salt and milk until it totals 8 ounces)


1/2 cup water with 1 level teaspoon of baking soda added


2 teaspoons vanilla








Mix all ingredients together like pie dough. On well floured surface roll out dough. It will be a little sticky, but once you have the flour on the dough it will roll out easily. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick (no thinner). Use round cookie cutter, lightly spray cookie sheet. Bake at 375 F degrees for 12-15 minutes. (I bake for 9-10 minutes) Take from oven, sprinkle small amount of sugar on tops. Keeps very well in Tupperware.








Norwegian Sugar Cookies

1 cup sugar


1 cup butter or margarine


2 eggs


3 Tablespoons milk


2 teaspoons vanilla


3 cups flour


1 teaspoon baking soda


2 teaspoon cream of tarter








Cream sugar and butter. Beat in eggs. Add milk and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients and stir (may need to add 1/4 cup of flour). Chill 1 hour. Roll thin and sprinkle sugar or roll into balls with a glass dipped in sugar press down. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.








Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar


1 teaspoon vanilla extract


1 teaspoon orange extract


3 eggs


3 3/4 cups all purpose flour


pinch of salt


2 teaspoons baking powder

red or green sugar crystals (of desired)








Beat together butter, granulated sugar, vanilla, orange extract and eggs until light and fluffy. Beat in flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda until thoroughly blended. Refrigerate until firm, several hours or over night. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease baking sheets. Bake for 7-9 minutes or until light brown in color. Watch carefully.

Stir yeast in water; let stand 5 to 10 minutes. Cream butter thoroughly; gradually blend in flour. Add yeast to butter and flour. Form dough by teaspoonful into a ball. Press each ball flat in granulated sugar (sprinkled on foil); first one side, then the other. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet in 375 degree oven 15 to 20 minutes. Traditional Christmas Sugar Cookies

1/2 teaspoon salt


1/2 teaspoon baking powder


1 3/4 cup flour


3/4 cup (heaping full) sugar (plus sugar to sprinkle prior to baking)


1/2 cup shortening


1 large egg


1 teaspoon (heaping full) vanilla extract

Mix together salt and baking powder. Sift salt and baking powder mixture together with flour. Mix in shortening and sugar with the flour mixture. Beat in egg, making sure the mixture is fully mixed. Add the vanilla and stir well. Roll mixture into a log, wrap in wax paper and refrigerate for a few hours. When ready to decorate, remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll out on a flat working surface. Allow children to cut dough using Christmas cookie cutters, place on ungreased cookie sheet and decorate cookies with decorative sugars. Sprinkle a little sugar on each cookie prior to baking. 1 (8-ounce) roll refrigerated sugar cookie dough


1/2 cup pistachios, lightly chopped


1/2 cup dried cherries


1 (11-ounce) bag white chocolate chips





Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.


Open sugar cookie log and press into a rectangle on cutting board. Add pistachios and cherries, press into dough and then re-shape into a log. Slice into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Transfer cookies to a baking sheet.





Bake 7 to 11 minutes, until golden around the edges. Transfer to wire racks to cool completely.





While cookies are baking, melt white chocolate chips in a double boiler or bowl over simmering water.





When cookies are cool, dip bottom half of cookies into melted white chocolate and place on waxed or parchment paper to cool.

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies





Ingredients


1/2 cup butter, softened


1 cup granulated sugar


1 teaspoon baking powder


1/4 teaspoon baking soda


Dash salt


1/2 cup dairy sour cream


1 egg


1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel


1/2 teaspoon lemon extract


2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour


Powdered Sugar Icing (see recipe below) or your favorite frosting








Directions 鈥?Preheat oven to 375


1. In mixing bowl, beat butter with electric mixer 30 seconds. Add sugar, baking powder, soda, and salt; beat well. Beat in sour cream, egg, peel, and lemon extract.


2. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Using wooden spoon, stir in remaining flour. Divide in half. Cover; chill 1 to 2 hours or until easy to handle.


3. On a well-floured surface, roll out half of the dough at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a cooking cutter, cut dough into desired shapes. Place cookies 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.


4. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 6 to 7 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are light brown. Transfer to wire rack; cool.





Powdered Sugar Frosting: In a medium mixing bowl, beat together 4 cups sifted powdered sugar and 1/4 cup milk. Stir in additional milk if needed, 1 teaspoon at a time, until glaze is easy to spread - frost cookies.


Makes about 45 cookies.
